As representatives of refugee-led organizations, we had the honor of speaking at a significant event last Saturday attended by the President of the UN General Assembly. Our address was twofold: to showcase the commendable work done by refugees and to highlight the ongoing challenges we face.
1. Celebrating Achievements of Refugee Initiatives: We highlighted the significant efforts and accomplishments of refugees and organizations like Aspire Digital Hub. Despite numerous challenges, these groups have demonstrated remarkable resilience and innovation. We showcased specific examples of positive impacts made in our communities, emphasizing the role these organizations play in providing essential support, educational opportunities, and resources to fellow refugees.
2. Discussing Persistent Challenges for Refugees: Alongside our achievements, we focused on the enduring challenges that we as refugees continue to confront. We emphasized the issue of limited access to basic services, which is a major obstacle to living productive, normal lives. The condition of women and girls, especially concerning gender-based violence, was a critical aspect of our speech, underscoring the urgency of more effective protective and empowering measures.
3. Advocating for Capacity Building and Policy Advocacy: We called for enhanced capacity building for organizations led by refugees, like Aspire Digital Hub, stressing that with adequate support and policy advocacy, our impact could be significantly magnified. We also highlighted the importance of involving refugees in policy-making processes to ensure that these policies accurately address our needs and realities.
4. Addressing Mental Health: We brought attention to the critical yet often neglected issue of mental health among refugees. The trauma of displacement and the stress of adapting to new circumstances are profound, and we advocated for increased support and resources in mental health care.
5. Plea for Solidarity and Concrete Action: In conclusion, we appealed to the President of the UN General Assembly and other stakeholders for greater solidarity and action towards the refugee community. We emphasized that with collective efforts and enduring support, the challenges faced by refugees can be overcome, paving the way for a more inclusive and promising future.
Our speech was not just about highlighting the challenges but also about illustrating the strength, potential, and aspirations of the refugee community, represented by organizations like Aspire Digital Hub. We urged the global community to recognize, support, and collaborate with us in our endeavors.
